Congratulations to Gudrun Wallentin, for her dissertation she received the " Förderungspreis 2011 des FSP Alpiner Raum - Mensch und Umwelt" from the University of Innsbruck.
Starting September 2011, Gudrun Wallentin, has been appointed to the position of Director of Studies for the UNIGIS MSc programme at the University of Salzburg, Centre for Geoinformatics. The UNIGIS association of worldwide partner institutions is offering postgraduate distance learning programmes for in-service GIS professionals with an MSc degree. >> http://www.unigis.ac.at , http://www.unigis.net
Congratulations to Gudrun Wallentin for a successful defense of her PhD thesis on June 10th, 2011. Gudrun's project was entitled "Modelling Alpine tree line dynamcis." During the paper based PhD research Gudrun has published her research findings in a number of high ranking journals such as in Ecological Modelling and the International Journal of Geographical Information Science. From October 2008 she has been also the ÖAW-GIScience co-ordinator of the econtentplus project “Best Practice Network for SDI in Nature Conservation. (Nature-SDIplus)” and contributed her expertise to the Sparkling Science projects “Schools on Ice” and “GeoKOM-PEP”.
During the summer semester 2011, Thomas Jekel, senior researcher at ÖAW-GIScience, has been invited as Guest Lecturer at the Department of Geography, University of Jena, Germany. He will teach three courses on Geography Didactics.
Starting February 2011, Adrijana Car, a senior researcher at ÖAW-GIScience, has been appointed to the position of Associate Professor in GIS at the Faculty of Economics, Department of Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development, German University of Technology, Muscat, Oman.
In October 2010, Matthias Möller, a senior researcher at ÖAW-GIScience, has been appointed Professor for Cartography, Geoinformation Science and Remote Sensing at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin.

2010 AGEO award for Mariana Belgiu, who is a PhD student at ÖAW-GIScience. She won second place for her thesis on “Making Geographic Resources Discoverable – an Approach towards a Streamlined Metadata Generation Process”.
Thomas Jekel and his project team received the Sparkling Science Award for the "Schools on Ice" project in June 2008. Thomas Jekel is a senior scientist at ÖAW-GIScience with a research focus on Geoinformation in education & inclusion of social space in spatial decision support systems.
At the 2007 Managing Alpine Future Conference in Innsbruck Gudrun Wallentin, a PhD student at ÖAW-GIScience, received the prize for the best scientific poster: "Modelling spontaneous reforestation after land use and climate change."
