Salzburg GIScience PhD Programme evolving into FWF DOCTORAL COLLEGE!

>> A new long term GIScience DOCTORAL COLLEGE was awarded to the University of Salzburg under the prestigious and highly competitive ‚DK‘ framework of Austria‘s National Science Fund (FWF).
The program titled „Geographic Information Science. Integrating interdisciplinary concepts and methods“ will select an initial set of fully funded PhD candidates in mid 2011.

The Salzburg cluster of GIScience research institutions is supporting a joint programme for graduate students. These students work on projects based at the University of Salzburg - Z_GIS , the Research Studio iSPACE , ÖAW GIScience or externally e.g. with cooperation partners from industry.

Team-based supervision includes professors from international partners (e.g. across the UNIGIS International network) and brings students together in seminars and research workshops. The 'Geoinformatics Colloquium' series links students with visiting scientists and provides a forum for exchange of ideas and stimulating discussion.

In the frame of the GIScience Doctoral College Robert Marschallinger, senior scientist at ÖAW-GIScience, will lead the topic "3D modelling and simulation of sediment structures in overdeepened alpine basins and implications for hydro(geo)logical modelling". Josef Strobl, ÖAW-GIScience director will be responsible for the thesis topic "Spatial System Dynamics: Simulation for Decision Support". For more information please visit the DK Website.

As one partner in the Salzburg multi-institution doctoral programme in GIScience, the ÖAW-GIScience institute is contributing to the advancement of science and the qualification of junior scientists through highly innovative PhD projects integrated with the ÖAW-GIScience research programme. PhD students who constitute a key asset throughout the organization, are given a chance to lead and implement, are being stimulated, motivated and mentored to achieve highly recognized outcomes with a focus on research quality and team-based collaboration.
